Religious Men and Women in Laguna gather to become mission animators

It was a bi-annual general assembly of the Association of Religious in Laguna or ARELA organized by its chairperson, Fr. Rolo Alcasid, SDB, who, at the same time, is the Diocesan Mission Director of the Diocese of San Pablo, Laguna. The assembly took place last August 20, 2011 at the auditorium of Mary Help of Christians School in Canlubang, Laguna with the theme "The Missionary Dimension of Religious Life." One of the reasons for the gathering was to tap ARELA as collaborators with the PMS Diocesan Director in his work of promoting mission awareness in the diocese.

PMS Indonesia holds National Congress of St. Peter the Apostle

The Karya Kaepausan Indonesia or the Pontifical Mission Societies in Indonesia is celebrating its 40 years of foundation this year. In line with the celebration, Rev. Fr. Romanus Harjito, O. Carm, PMS National Director of Indonesia, organized a National Congress of the Pontifical Society of St. Peter the Apostle (POSPA) in Crosier Pratista Priory and Retreat Center in Bandung, Indonesia from August 10 to 14, 2011. The event was participated in by more than 80 delegates mostly priests and religious who are connected in campaigning for vocations for their respective congregations and seminaries. Highlight of the congress was the talk of Msgr. Jan Dumon, Secretary General of the Pontifical Society of St. Peter the Apostle. His talk opened the minds of the participants on the Spirituality of Jeanne Bigard, foundress of the Society, and the relevance of the POSPA in the modern time. Upon the invitation of Fr. Harjito, Fr. Socrates C. Mesiona, MSP, National Director of the Pontifical Mission Societies in Philippines, together with Anthony Dameg, attended the said conference to express solidarity with the local Church of Indonesia and learn as well of how they organize the Congress of St. Peter the Apostle.

Filipino Missionaries are sent for foreign mission

Twenty-nine Filipino missionaries from different religious communities participated in the mission sending ceremony organized by the Episcopal Commission on Mission of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines and the Pontifical Mission Societies last July 9, 2011, 10:00 o’clock in the morning, at the chapel of St. Scholastica College, L. Guinto, Malate Manila. The mission sending ceremony was integrated in a solemn celebration of the holy Eucharist presided over by Bishop Edwin de la Pena, Chairman of the Episcopal Commission on Mission and Bishop of the Prelature of St. Mary’s in Marawi. In his homily Bishop de la Pena said that the departing missionaries are a living testimony of the church’s commitment to the missionary mandate of Jesus "to go out to ends of the earth." Quoting Redemtoris Missio, he reminded the faithful that "faith is strengthened when it is shared."

2nd Diocesan Children’s Congress

Last May 27, 2011 the Diocese of Novaliches held the 2nd Diocesan Children’s Congress with the theme "Bata Bata, May Bokasyon Ka? In attendance were 800 children from various parishes and Catholic schools in the diocese. The gathering coincided with the culmination of Flores de Mayo, thus making the occasion also to promote the use of the mission rosary. Various activities were lined up during the day, like: games, talks, praying of the rosary, and the celebration of the holy Eucharist. In his homily, Bishop Antonio Tobias D.D., Bishop of Novaliches, asked the children to pray regularly and to be aware of their Christian vocation. He urged them to pray one "Hail Mary" daily for children in the mission.

Bro. Anthony Dameg of the Pontifical Mission Societies National Office introduced nicely the mission rosary and explained its history and purpose. The congress was initiated by the Mission Animation Ministry, headed by Fr. Polash Henry Gomes SX, Diocesan Mission Director, in collaboration with the Vocation and Education/Formation Commission and the Legion of Mary.

Mission Directors Gather for the 58th Assembly

More than eighty delegates representing fifty-seven archdioceses, dioceses, prelatures and vicariates of the country gathered last June 13-16, 2011 at Riviere Retreat House, Catalunan Grande, Davao City for the 58th Annual Assembly of Diocesan Mission Directors of the Philippines. The theme of the assembly was "Parishes as Evangelizing Communities: Exploring Pathways for Mission."
